Our story

Seventy years of making shoes.

Kulture is the boot and workwear range of Liberty Leathers — a family shoemaking business that began in 1954. Our boots are cut, stitched and soled on our own campus in Gharaunda, Karnal, by the same people and on the same floor as everything Liberty makes.

We built Kulture for people who are on their feet for a living — police and security staff, forest guards, factory and site workers — and for anyone who wants a boot made to a standard rather than a season.

Where we come from

From 1954 to today

  1. 1954The Liberty group beginsFounded by the Gupta family, Liberty starts out making footwear for export — and its quality is accepted and asked for again in markets abroad.
  2. 1980Liberty Leathers is bornSet up to meet international demand for leather and leather footwear. It turns raw hides into finished leather, and its shoes and shoe uppers are exported for their workmanship.
  3. 1984A full range for IndiaSuccess overseas leads to a complete range for the Indian market — well made and honestly priced.
  4. TodayThird generation, four brandsRun by the third generation of the family, Liberty Leathers makes Kulture boots and workwear alongside its school, sports and women's ranges, all from Gharaunda.

Before the boot

We started with the hide

Liberty Leathers began as a tannery. For decades it has turned raw hides into finished leather — and that leather has gone into shoes, garments, accessories and furniture made across India and abroad.

Its shoe uppers — derbies, golf shoes, sandals, slippers and ladies' booties — were exported for their workmanship. It has made leather jackets, trousers and driving gloves, upholstery leather tested for wet and dry rub fastness, and, as Porvair International's licensee in India, PU-coated Porvair leather in a unit of its own.

That is the knowledge behind a Kulture boot: people who can read a hide, know which part of it will crease and which will hold, and cut accordingly.

Where it's made

A green campus in Gharaunda

Liberty Leathers stands in the green countryside of Gharaunda, on the G.T. Road in Karnal, Haryana. The complex is ringed with plantations, and its production line takes raw material all the way to a finished, boxed pair.

Waste disposal is planned and technically supervised so our processes don't harm the land around us, and we keep the working floor clean, calm and healthy for the people who make our shoes.

How a pair is made

Five steps, one floor

  1. 01
CuttingLeather and canvas are inspected and cut into the pieces of the upper.
  2. 02
StitchingSkilled hands stitch the pieces into the upper — seams, eyelets, padding and badges.
  3. 03
PU & PVC DIPDirect injection on our PU and PVC lines: the sole is moulded straight onto the upper, so sole and shoe become one.
  4. 04
Stuck-onFinishing and fitting — the last parts of the shoe are bonded and checked.
  5. 05
PackagingEach pair is inspected once more, paired by size and boxed for dispatch.

Behind every pair

Made by people who make shoes

Research & developmentDesigners, prototype artisans, colourists and quality technicians working on what comes next — new lasts, soles and materials.
Quality at every stageEach department keeps a close watch on its own work and stays in step with the floor at every stage, so the finished pair is a true reflection of its design.

Libergo is our own ergonomic insock, moulded from dense open-cell PU foam. It goes into our canvas boots to cushion every step through a long posting — and it's removable, so it can be replaced when it has done its work.
